Russian scientists who have actively being trying to make cancer vaccine have finally announced a new vaccine called Ennteromix for cancer. It is developed using mRNA technology and have also said that it is fully ready for clinical use as they have done successful trials over the years.
What makes Enteromix different?
The technology used in creation of enteromix vaccine is same as used in covid-19 vaccine. This technology teaches the body’s own cell how to produce proteins that trigger an immune response unlike traditional vaccines that used to weakened the virus.
Results from Trials
According to FMBA, Enteromix underwent three years of preclinical trials. Results showed:
- Tumors shrank or slowed growth by 60% to 80%, depending on the cancer type.
- The vaccine was found safe even with repeated doses.
- Improved survival rates were recorded in test subjects.
The first target the Russian scientists has decided is to overcome colorectal cancer (large intestine), but trials are also advancing for glioblastoma (a fast-growing brain cancer) and certain types of melanoma, including eye-related cancers.
Global significance of ‘Enteromix’
If the vaccine gets successful, than the Enteromix could become one of the first widely available cancer vaccines in the world. This vaccine can be the nectar for those suffering from colorectal cancer and brain cancers as these are the most aggressive form of cancer across the globe.
For cancer patients around the world, including India, this vaccine can be the new hope beyond chemotherapy and radiation. Experts around the world however, are caution that before making it available around the globe a full-scale clinical testing and approval are still needed, which can make it more trustworthy.
What’s next?
At the time of announcement which was made during the 10th Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, attended by over 8,400 participants from more than 75 countries, researchers said they are now preparing for the next phase of trials, and after trial only we can decide when the vaccine might reach hospitals around the world.
TMC Note :
This development in the field of medical science signals a turning point in cancer research. However, it is very early to predict future of the vaccine, as the real impact of ‘Enteromix’ will depend on global testing, regulatory approvals, and accessibility. But it is one of the big step in the fight against cancer.
